Pinus sylvestris, also known as Scots Pine, is one of the only three conifers native to the UK. It is used primarily for shelter belts and screens, however, it also makes a stunning ornamental tree.

Description
A tall native evergreen conifer, the Scots Pine thrives in heathland and is planted for its timber. Mature trees can grow to heights of 35m and live for up to 700 years. A conical shape when young, mature trees are much more open with a distinctive long trunk and flat top. it has been proposed as the national tree for Scotland, where it grows naturally in pinewoods known locally as Caledonian forests, supporting a unique selection of wildlife.

Planting Position
Suitable for most locations and soil types. Can handle exposed sites and is very hardy. Best grown in fertile, well-drained soil in full sunlight.

Size
Growth Rate: Medium
Final Size: 30-35m
Final Spread: Wider than 8m

Foliage and Flowers
Twisted needle-like leaves are grey/green in colour and grow in pairs. Male and female flowers are on the same tree, the male ones are found in clusters at the base of shoots, and the females are small purple-red beads that form on the tips of young shoots. After wind pollination, the female flowers turn green and form cones, which mature the following season.

Plant Interest
Scots Pine is attractive to wildlife, providing shelter for many insects, which in turn are a food source for many species of birds. It also allows birds roosting cover for the winter. The broad canopy provides shade to some rare and special plants in the Caledonian Forests, such as Twinflower (Linnaea borealis) and Creeping Ladies Orchid (Goodyera repens).

Uses
The wood is used for pulp, furniture, chipboard, pit props and telegraph poles. Commercial forestry plantation rotations vary between 50 and 120 years, with longer rotations in the northeast where growth is slower.
