Overview
Rosa rugosa rubra is a vigorous upright shrub with prickly stems, ideal for use in a hedge. Glorious fragrant pink single or semi-double flowers are followed by large rose hips.
Description
packed shrub, with prickly stems, makes for a tough hedge either on its own or within a mixed hedge. It brings colour and wildlife interest to a hedge.
Planting Position
Suitable for most locations and soil types. Can handle exposed sites, especially coastal areas, and is very hardy. Avoid water-logged soils. Best grown in moist, but well drained soils, in either full sun or part shade.

Foliage and Flowers
Leaves are glossy, rich green in colour, turning yellow in the autumn. Glorious fragrant pink single or double flowers turn into large tomato-like rose hips in the autumn.
Plant Interest
Japanese Rose is very attractive to wildlife with the flowers providing nectar for bees and birds and the dense habit supporting a wide range of insects.
Landscape Use
Japanese Rose works well as part of a mixed hedge or as a single species hedge. It can also be used as an ornamental shrub.
Uses
The sweetly scented flowers are often used in Container-pourri.
