Overview
A small evergreen with almost spineless, shiny green leaves and an abundance of large red berries.
Description
This variety of evergreen Holly is popular with gardeners as it is monoicous and as such has both male and female flowers on the same plant, ensuring pollination and therefore the production of berries. Its form is somewhat open. The new shoots are purple in colour and the leaves, almost spineless, are a bright and shiny green. The flowers are small and white, giving way to an abundance of large and bright red berries in the autumn that sustain into the winter. At maturity it will likely achieve a height of 8m, with up to a 4m spread, over 20-50 years.
Planting Position
Given its size and the fact that this tree is an evergreen consideration needs to be given to its planting location and it is not ideal for a small garden. Having said that Holly do respond very well to pruning and as such it could be kept closely cropped to fit a smaller sContainer. In such an instance pruning should ideally be undertaken with secateurs to avoid cutting the leaves. It is a hardy specimen that can be grown in full sun or partial shade, in a location of any aspect, and will tolerate exposure. It also copes well with all soil types and soil pH.
Attributes
This is a versatile tree that can be grown as a specimen, or planted in groups to create a screen or hedge. It offers aesthetic value from its colourful new shoot growth and bright leaves, and is highly decorative when in fruit.
