Overview
Ilex aquifolium is an evergreen tree with spiny, glossy, wavy margined dark green leaves. Insignificant flowers in summer are followed by long lasting red berries in autumn on female trees.
 
Description
Common Holly is a native evergreen tree which may reach upwards of 15m and can live for 300 years. This tree is often used in mixed native hedging and is found in woodlands. It is a slow growing and hardy plant which provides interest from seasonal colour across the year.  The leaves are dark green glossy and oval, younger plants have spiky leaves. Holly trees are dioecious – meaning that male and female flowers are found on separate plants in the spring. The recognizable red berries are formed on the female plants in the autumn.
 
Planting Position
Suitable for most locations and soil types. Can handle exposed sites and is hardy. Best grown in moist but well drained soil in full sun or partial shade.
 
Attributes
 
Holly provides a dense cover for nesting birds and its leaf litter can be used by hedgehogs and other small mammels for hibernation. The flowers provide pollen for various insects. The leaves are eaten by various species of caterpillar. Deer often eat the smooth leaves during winter.
