Description
A medium sized specimen selected for its high aesthetic value all year round, also known as Chinese Red Birch. The bark of this tree ranges in colour from red to orange to brown and peels off in paper thin sheets to reveal new and slightly lighter bark beneath. As stems mature they graduate to white in colour. The trees habit is pyramidal with ascending branches. It bears green ovate leaves with finely toothed margins, and long yellow male catkins. Female catkins are green and more discrete. The Fascination will achieve a mature height of between 8-12m, with an 8m spread, over a period of 20-50 years.
Planting Position
Given the ultimate height and spread of this particular tree it is not recommended for a small garden. It does prefer to be established in full sun or partial shade but copes well with exposure and all soil types or pH. Birch trees are notoriously hardy and cope well on the poorest of soils.
Attributes
This tree offers all year round interest, as with most Birch trees, via its stunning bark, ornate catkins and eye-catching foliage which turns from green to yellow in the autumn before falling from the tree. Birch leaves often stay onto the tree into early winter bringing a welcome splash of colour to the landscape.
