A wonderful alternative to the native English Oak, planted for its fiery foliage display. This ornamental tree is a great for specimen planting for planting in large spaces. Grows to 7m x 5m after 10 years.
Description
A fast growing large deciduous tree with an open, spreading crown and smooth silver grey bark. The large, deep green leaves turn orange and stunning crimson-brown before dropping in the winter.
Planting Position
Grow in deep, fertile, well-drained soil. Adaptable to most soils even heavy clay and chalky and tolerates urban pollution.
Attributes
As valuable for wildlife as our native oak, popular with nesting birds and pollinators. Will grow up to 25m with a lovely rounded crown. In spring, slender male catkins hang in clusters and the tiny female flowers are found singly or in clusters. After pollination by wind, female flowers develop into a fruit enclosed by a rounded cup, known as an acorn, which takes two years to ripen.
