Overview
Pyrus Communis - Catillac
A traditional French pear variety used for culinary purposes only.
Flowering Group: 4
Pick: October
Use: Cooking
Description
Catillac was discovered in the Gironde in France in 1665 and is known to be the best cooking variety. Unlike most modern pears, these are rarely eaten fresh and should only be used for slow poaching and cooking. This hardy tree is a reliable heavy-cropper, producing large, full green fruit that turns to greenish-yellow with a dull red flush, when ready for picking.
Planting Position
Being a Quince A rootstock it is slightly more vigorous compared to Quince C. It is suitable for growing as a bush and begins to fruit after four to five years. This tree grows well on most soil conditions apart from alkaline soils. Like all pears, they need a warm, sunny site which isn't too exposed..
Attributes
Catillac is triploid therefore it needs two other varieties of pollinating trees nearby. With vigorous spreading growth, the fruits have an even round shape and are quite disease-resistant. As well as having interesting fruits, this tree has very attractive blossom in the spring.
