Overview

Prunus Domestica 'Reeves'

A large dual-purpose plum with a fabulous flavour.

Flowering Group: 3

Pick: September

Use: Eating & Cooking

Description

Similar to Victoria, Reeves is a dual-purpose mid-season plum but is one of the best-flavoured plums when eaten fresh, although Victoria wins hands down when cooked. It is large, round, with pale reddish-purple skin that is thin and smooth, and the pale yellow flesh becomes fairly soft when ripe. A lovely plum that is used commercially on a small scale across the UK and Europe.

Planting Position

Because plums have quite high moisture requirements, they are best planted in loamy or clay soils that must be well-drained, as plums do not do well in waterlogged ground. Plums are hardy trees, however they are one of the first to flower, so it's important to plant them out of frost pockets and windy areas, so not to damage the flowers. Preferably a sheltered and sunny sContainer will give you the best results.

Attributes

Great flavour when eaten fresh, and equally as good when used for culinary purposes. This is also a heavy cropping plum.
