Overview

Prunus Domestica 'Opal'

Opal is a cross between Early Favourite and Oullins Gage.

Flowering Group: 3

Pick: Late July

Use: Eating

Description
Opal was bred in Sweden and released in 1925 and is a cross between a plum and a gage.  It is recognised as one of the best-flavoured early plum varieties with the gage-like, sweet flavour and perfect when picked straight from the tree.  With yellow flesh, the skin has a reddish-purple hue and a small stone that seperates easily from the flesh, freestone.  During the spring it has white, scented flowers that attract lots of pollinators.  Opal has far better disease resistance compared to most other varieties.  With its vigorous growth, it makes this a plum tree that is suited to many areas of the UK.

Planting Position
To maintain the intense and sweet flavour of the Opal plums, it is recommended they are planted against a south-facing wall or in a sunny aspect, making caring for these trees even easier.  One of the most reliable garden varieties, it is suitable for growing throughout the UK

Attributes
Opal is an excellent new variety with large fruits, heavy cropping and the finest flavour of all the early varieties. Pollinate with Victoria or Czar.
