Norway Spruce is a hardy evergreen conifer probably best known for its appearance at Christmas bedecked with lights. It is a fast-growing large tree that can grow up to 1m per year in good conditions, although its growth does slow once it reaches over 20m.

Planting Position
Suitable for most locations and soil types. Not recommended for very poor, shallow, chalky soil, as isolated specimens, or narrow shelterbelts in very exposed sites. Best grown in moist, well-drained soils in full or part shade.

Size
Growth Rate: Fast
Final Height: 35-55m
Final Spread: 4-8m

Foliage & Flowers
The leaves are needle-like and pointed with a rich aroma. They have male and female flowers; the males are a cluster of stamens, which turn from red to yellow in the spring and are laden with pollen. The female flowers are red and upright, typically found at the top of the tree. Once wind-pollinated, they turn green and grow into brown cones. The seeds are released in the spring.

Plant Interest
Norway Spruce is attractive to wildlife, providing shelter and food for various species of moths, beetles, hoverflies and weevils.

Landscape Use
Norway Spruce is good in dense planting for perimeter shelter and internal roosting sites.

Uses
The timber from the Norway Spruce is pale and strong; it is often used for joists, flooring and furniture making. The most common use for the Norway Spruce is as a Christmas tree.
