Overview

An extremely hardy cultivar of the Common Holly.

Description
Introduced around 1960 by H. and D. Nissen from Wuppertal in Germany, 'Alaska' is a more traditional looking holly that is relatively slender, making it an excellent choice for narrow hedges. The leaves are dark green and spiny, but generally narrower and more sinuate than other species. Alaska is a self-pollinating female variety that produces pretty red berries in autumn/winter but will produce even more berries when a male Holly is present.

Planting Position
This truly hardy tree will thrive in almost any well drained soil, in shade or sun. It is most tolerant of urban pollution and coastal conditions, except for really wet water-logged conditions.

Attributes
With its upright habit and dark green foliage, Alaska looks fantastic in winter and will give a good evergreen structure to any garden design, along with a plentitude of berries for winter food for birds.
