Description
Our hybrid poplars have been produced by natural plant breeding techniques. The result has led to the propagation of our own selection of very vigorous clones that will grow approximately two meters per year (6-8 ft) and will continue to grow to produce large handsome trees with stout trunks. They make excellent high screens and windbreaks. They are also used to lift game birds and for timber.
Planting
The cuttings are easy to plant and require little maintenance once in the ground. Planting may be carried out anytime between early November to mid-May and are suitable for any well-drained soil on sheltered or exposed sites and in sun or partial shade.
Attributes
This deciduous tree has large glossy green heart-shaped leaves, turning yellow in Autumn.
Which size to choose?
All sizes of cutting roots equally well as they have the ability to make roots from any part of the stem and so, if planted deeply, will produce deep roots, which will always find moisture. However, some cuttings are better suited for ceretain situations than others.
30cm cuttings - Good for large scale planting with high standard of weed control requried
60cm / 90cm cuttings - Good all purpose cutting for most situations, more energy than 30cm
120cm / 180cm cuttings - Good for dry sites such as sands and gravels or on banks
Further information can be found here.
The rooted trees and longer cuttings will cope better with challenging conditions and weed or grass competition to give instantly visible results. See our bare root options here.
Alternatives to cuttings
As an alternative to the cuttings, we also sell bare root whips - these are effectively a year ahead of the cuttings as they already have a basic root in place and will Containerentially give you a slightly faster result. To help you choose - see the information on the Rooted or Unrooted. For more instant impact, we also offer more mature trees.
