Overview
Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey'
Brown Turkey is one of the best and most reliable figs for the UK climate.
Pick: Mid August
Use: Eating
Description
With large, glossy, palmate leaves, this decidious, spreading shrub is highly ornamental. If given a sunny sheltered sContainer, ideally south or south-west, it should produce a reliable heavy crop of brown, pear-shaped fruits with red, sweet flesh. These Mediterranean fruits, rich in Vitamin C, should be available for picking from August to September, providing the crop is not affected by frost. To encourage the tree to fruit, it is recommended that the roots are contained and not allowed to spread.
Planting Position
Figs are best grown in full sun, ideally sheltered against a south facing wall that radiates heat. They will need to be wrapped in frost protection during winter. Figs adapt to most soils however waterlogged soils will starve the tree of oxygen, causing roots to rot, similarly, compressed soil can also have the same effect.
Attributes
An interesting and easy plant to grow, figs make a dramatic feature when fan trained against a sunny wall or grown in a container on the patio. They are extremely hardy and reliable.
