Description
An imposing British native tree with wavy margined leaves, pale at first, turning glossy dark green, then yellow to orange-brown in autumn. Beech is one of the UK's most popular garden hedging plants but also makes a wonderful tree for a large garden or open space.

Also known as Common or European Beech, this noble deciduous tree has a broad, domed crown and can grow in excess of 40m in height.

Planting Position
Green Beech thrives well in drier, free-draining soils, such as chalk, limestone and light loams. It favours humid conditions and can be sensitive to winter frost. The foliage is very dense, and comparatively few plants will grow under Beech trees.  Although if you have ever borne witness to the wonders of bluebells under a fresh spring beech canopy,

Attributes

Often found in woodlands, beech trees, partly due to their immense size, dense canopy and their potential for a long life, can be home to a wide range of wildlife. The leaves provide forage for various species of caterpillars, the seeds are eaten by birds, squirrels, mice and voles. They also provide homes for wood boring insects and hole nesting birds.
