Overview
Small multi-stemmed tree with an abundance of blossom in spring followed by stunning red and purple foliage.
Description
This is by far one of the most beautiful small deciduous trees for its range of coloured foliage and flowers. In spring before the leaves appear, the tree is adorned with an abundance of pink, purple or crimson pea-like flowers in clusters on its bare branches. Beautiful heart-shaped foliage emerges which is glossy and vibrant red, darkening to a rich purple colour during summer. As autumn arrives, the leaves turn to striking tones of orange, red yellow and purple. It's no wonder the RHS has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
Planting Position
Cercis canadensis does well in moderately fertile and well-drained soils. It is tolerant of clay soils and is also tolerant of drought and shade. For the best vibrant leaf colour, plant in full sun but with some part shade to accomodate when the months are hotter.
Attributes
What more is there to like about a small tree for your garden, with its vibrant red and purple heart-shaped leaves in summer and firework display of oranges, reds and purples in autumn. This would look great planted in a border contrasting with lime coloured foliage.
