Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Grayswood Ghost' is a stunning, award winning, upright, ornamental tree providing multiple seasons of interest. It looks fantastic planted as a single tree and even more impactful when planted as a group.

 

Description

Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Grayswood Ghost' is a low maintenance Himalayan Birch Tree that displays yellowish-brown catkins during spring,  followed by flossy green leaves which are larger than the native silver birch. The leaves turn an attractive golden yellow in autumn and when dropped, reveal a ghostly white bark which will brighten up any corner of the garden.

 

A medium-sized, ornamental tree, himalayan birch are amongst some of the smaller varieties of birch available. 

 

Originally propagated from a tree in Grayswood Hill, Surrey. Received an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

 

Planting Position

This Himalayan Birch Tree is a striking addition, suitable for medium to large-sized gardens and is often planted in formal gardens in groups which make a particular visual impact. Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Grayswood Ghost' will do well in sheltered areas in full sun to partial shade and in moist but well-drained soil. It prefers slightly acid soil and is tolerant of slightly wet or dry soils.

 

Attributes

Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Grayswood Ghost' requires little maintenance but does not like heavy pruning. Remove dead, diseased, damaged, congested or crossing shoots during winter or early spring.

 

Size

After 10 years, the tree can reach a height of 6m with a 4m spread.
