Description
A fast-growing small deciduous broadleaf tree native to the UK and most of Europe, it is also known as Quaking Aspen. It is a beautiful tree with shimmering foliage. When mature, it can reach heights of 25m.
Planting Position
Suitable for most locations and soil types. Can handle exposed sites and is very hardy. Best grown in fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun, but can handle waterlogged soil.

Foliage and Flowers
The leaves are dark green with large teeth. Young leaves are bronze in colour, turning green, then vibrant yellow before falling in autumn. The Aspen is dioecious, which means that the male and female catkins are on separate trees in March/April. Once pollinated, the female catkins release tiny fluffy seeds in the summer.

Aspen is attractive to all types of wildlife, from insects to birds and even beavers.
Landscape Use
Aspen can be used in a parkland setting.
Uses
Aspen wood is lightweight and was used for making surgical splints, paddles, oars, and even wagon bottoms.
