Overview

Malus domestica 'James Grieve'

A hardy, medium sized apple bearing fruit that can be used for dessert or culinary purposes.

Flowering Group: 3

Pick: Early September

Use: Eating & Cooking

Description
One of our best-selling apples, James Grieve is great for cooking and eating. One of the more hardy specimens, it copes well in colder climates and with higher levels of rainfall. It is a reliable tree in terms of fruit production. Its fruit are a yellow green in colour, slightly speckled orange red. They keep their shape well when cooked and are slightly savoury and crisp when consumed raw. They are best harvested between September and October but can endure longer into the winter.

Planting Position
This particular apple can tolerate partial shade however as with all fruit trees will prefer full sun. It requires a sheltered location with a south or west facing aspect. It grows best on loam, clay or sandy soils and likes a neutral soil pH.

Attributes
James Grieve apple tree belongs to flowering group 3 and is partially self fertile. As such it would benefit from a pollination partner from groups 2, 3 or 4. Most white blossoming crab apples would make a good selection for pollination.

    James Grieve Apple Tree

I bought this for my friend's birthday. Fiona offered excellent advice, taking the time to make sure I chose exactly the right tree to meet my friend's requirements. Delivery was fast and the tree arrived on the day it was ordered for. It was well packaged and my friend was absolutely thrilled with it! Although I am not local to Bowhayes Trees, the cost to deliver was very reasonable and I will definitely purchase from them again. Highly recommend.
