Description
The Freeman maple is a hybrid of Red maple, Acer rubrum, and Silver maple, Acer saccharinum, discovered in the United States National Arboretum some years ago. The specimen brings together the best qualities from both species of tree which is most apparent in the attractive, deeply cut, palmate leaves and stunning red autumn foliage. Flowering in the spring the tree develops a vigorous canopy of green leaves that sustain the summer before providing a blaze of colour prior to leaf fall. Reaching heights of 12-17m in maturity, with a substantial crown spread, the Freeman maple is suitable for moderate or large gardens, or parklands, and would make a fantastic avenue feature given its delicate leaf shape and vibrant autumn colour.
Planting Position
In addition to bringing together the best foliar attributes this specimen has the hardy quality of the Silver maple and is better able to withstand multiple soil types and conditions than the Red maple which often struggles to establish in this country due the unfavorable soil pH. However, as with the Silver maple these trees can be susceptible to brittle branches and as such should not be planted in exposed sites.
Attributes
This medium sized tree offers attractive form and stunning foliage with the promise of an autumnal display not to be missed. As with all maples the flowers and fruit provide a valuable food source for birds, bees and small mammals.
