Description
The genus cherry produce a wide variety of deciduous trees, usually planted for their stunning flowers and foliar colouring. This species, also known as Cheal's Weeping Cherry, is referred to here by its Japanese name which means 'weeping chrysanthemum cherry'. It produces a small specimen with pendulous, arching branches adorned with 3cm, double pink flowers that develop late in the spring. The leaves are ovate and finely serrated. They emerge as a bronze colour and later turn a glossy green. The Kiku-shidare-zakura can be expected to reach 3m in height at maturity with a spread of between 2-4m, developing over 20-50 years.
Planting Position
Given the limited ultimate size and spread of this variety it is perfect for small gardens and makes a stunning specimen tree. It can also be incorporated into landscaping schemes for a variety of sites. Tolerant of any aspect it copes well in exposed or sheltered settings however requires full sun to achieve its full Containerential. It can be grown on all soil types and the full range of soil pH although does prefer moist but well drained locations.
Attributes
Clearly the main attribute for this tree is its high amenity value and versatility in terms of planting locations however, it will also attract a variety of insects and birds. Many of the flowering cherries are not self-fertile and require a suitable cross pollinator within close proximity in order to produce fruit. If you desire a tree that will fruit, please speak to us about self-fertile specimens or suitable cross pollinators.
