Foliage and flowers
The leaves are dark green and arranged along the stem in pairs, each at right angles. The white flowers are produced in mid-summer in panicles. The flowers produce a strong, pungent fragrance that many people find unpleasant. The fruit is a small glossy black berry, poisonous to humans but readily eaten by birds. A privet hedge which is kept trimmed will rarely produce flowers and fruit.
Plant Interest
The leaves and fruits are eaten by caterpillars and birds.
Landscape Use
Predominantly used as hedging in the UK, or can be used as an ornamental shrub. When used as a hedging plant, as it ages, it can become sparse and then can be pruned down to around 50cms; it will reshoot and regrow vigorously. Uses timber/logs/windbreaks/etc. Ligustrum ovalfolium is a common hedging plant in the UK. It is an excellent plant for topiary, or as a background for ornamental plants.
