Description
The Hawthorn is a remarkable tree. It is hardy, can be incredibly long lived and adapts to a variety of management techniques with ease. As a native specimen it is favoured by a huge variety of wildlife and closely associated with oak trees in our native forests. This particular cultivar produces an attractive and small tree with the typical green lobed leaves. Leaves may yellow prior to falling. Its flowers are pink with a white centre and give way to the trademark red haws in the autumn. Like all hawthorns it bears spines on the twigs and branches. It can be expected to reach a mature height of 8m, with a similar spread, over 20-50 years however may persist for decades after it reaches maturity before it begins to show any symptoms of decline.
Planting Position
Hawthorn are extremely hardy and cope with any planting situation. They also respond well to pruning and can be used to create a hedge on their own or with other species that will always be favoured by our wildlife for habitat and food sources. Consideration needs to be given to its planting location if established as a specimen tree given its Containerential for height and spread however partial branch reductions can be tolerated if required. The Crimson Cloud will tolerate exposure and any planting aspect, as well as any soil conditions although like most trees it does prefer moist but well drained sites.
Attributes
This variety of Hawthorn has a high amenity value when in flower and fruit and has a generally pleasing form. It is popular with a wider variety of insects and attracts birds providing shelter, habitat and food.
