Description
James Grieve is culinary and dessert apple that, as one of the more hardy specimens, copes well in colder climates with higher levels of rainfall. It is a reliable tree in terms of fruit production. Its fruit are a yellow green in colour, slightly speckled orange red. They keep their shape well when cooked and are slightly savoury and crisp when consumed raw. They are best harvested between September and October but can endure longer into the winter. This cultivar can be expected to reach a mature height of between 4m-8m with a similar spread in 5-10 years.

 

Planting Position
This particular apple can tolerate partial shade however as with all fruit trees will prefer full sun. It requires a sheltered sContainer with a south or west facing aspect. It grows best on loam, clay or sandy soils and likes a neutral soil pH.

 

Attributes
TThis species belongs to flowering group 3 and is partially self fertile. As such it would benefit from a pollination partner from groups 2, 3 or 4. Most white blossoming crab apples would make a good selection for pollination.
