• Compact evergreen hedging
• Slow growing
• Grows up to 1.5m
Description
Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken' is a popular compact evergreen hedging plant. This hardy, slower-growing laurel has a dense upright habit with dark green, glossy leaves which are more slender than the classic cherry laurel. Pretty white upright flower clusters appear in spring which are slowly followed on by deep red or black berries which appear in autumn, much loved by birds. A great option for a low-maintenance, smaller privacy hedge of 0.5-1.5m.
Planting Position
Suitable for normal, chalk and clay soils. Does well in sunny or shady positions and is just as happy in inland, exposed or coastal sites.
Attributes
The leaves of Otto Luyken are more slender than Rotundifolia but are a very glossy green. Small white fragrant flowers in spring which are occassionaly followed by glossy black fruit. The flowers attract bees and butterflies. The fruit are eaten by birds. The leaves and bark are poisonous, so avoid planting a laurel hedge next to livestock.
