These individual plastic mulch mats are designed to fit around the base of newly planted trees to keep them weed free during the important first growing season.
A variety of mulches can be used in the early stages after planting in order to supress weeds and keep moisture in the ground by reducing evaporation. This will ensure that the tree does not have to compete with weeds for the available water and nutrients resulting in better and faster establishment of the plant.
These plastic mulch mats also have the benefit of increasing the soil temparature slightly which encourages root growth in early spring. They are easy to fit around the base of the tree just requiring a slit to be made on one side from the centre to the edge and can be secured in place by pegs, ideally 6 per mat.
They are made from black photodegradable polythene and measure 60cm x 60cm and are good for approximately three to five growing seasons giving the tree plenty of time to get well established.
