A spectacular specimen tree, perfect for a small garden or woodland area.
Description
Also known as the Katsura Tree, Cercidiphyllum japonicum is a medium-sized deciduous tree which is incredibly elegant and would make a wonderful specimen tree for a small garden. Katsura is perfect for interest all year round with its constantly changing colour displays. In spring, its attractive heart-shaped leaves are bronze-tinted that gradually turn a lush green in summer, followed by brilliant orange, pink and yellow in autumn, which is also the time that they produce a smell of burnt sugar... delicious!
Planting Position
The Katsura tree requires moist but well drained, acidic soils. It will tolerate some lime but will grow better and produce more vivid autumn colour in acid soil. Although a very hardy tree it is vulnerable to late spring frosts as a young plant, so will need protection and will also benefit being planted in an area sheltered from strong winds.
Attributes
Ever-changing colour displays throught the seasons, pretty heart-shaped leaves that smell of candy floss in the autumn time, what more could you want from a tree!
