Prunus spinosa is a small deciduous shrub or small tree growing approximately 5 metres tall. It has black bark and stiff, dense spiny branches. Creamy-white flowers appear in spring followed by the sloe fruit known as a ‘drupe’ in autumn. The fruit is popularly used in the making of Sloe Gin.

Description
Prunus spinosa is more commonly known as blackthorn or sloe. It is native to the UK. A spiny shrub or tree with deep green leaves, it has pretty bowl-shaped white flowers in the spring before the leaves appear. The fruit (sloes) appear in September/October.
Planting Position
Blackthorn is suitable for most locations, although it grows best in moist, well-drained soil in full sunshine.

Foliage & Flowers
Black branches with sharp spiny thorns, deep green, ovate leaves, and small white flowers in early spring. Followed by oval black fruit in late autumn.
Plant Interest
The Blackthorn is attractive to wildlife, with various butterfly and moth caterpillars feasting on the leaves. The dense nature of the shrub makes it an ideal nesting site for birds.
Landscape Use
Blackthorn works well as part of a mixed native hedge, although the thorns are not an ideal hedge plant for livestock.
Uses
The timber is used for firewood and is much sought after for walking sticks. The fruits are popular for making jam and steeping in sugar with the addition of either Gin, Vodka or Brandy to make a sumptuous drink.
