Description
A bushy little tree that provides interest all year round. Amelanchier 'Canadensis' is a low maintenance, suckering multi- stemmed shrub that can be trained into a small tree. This terrific plant has four seasons of interest. During spring, emerging copper foliage contrasts beautifully with the upright sprays of bright white, star-shaped flowers that are very slightly fragrant and attractive to pollinators. As summer approaches the flowers are replaced with edible blue-black berries, providing a great source of food for wildlife and the foliage turns a rich green. By autumn the foliage takes on vibrant red and orange hues before falling in winter to reveal its elegant growth habit.
Planting Position
Snowy Mespilus should be planted in full sun to partial shade. It is tolerant to strong winds however this particular plant is not good in coastal areas. This plant is easily grown in moist, but well-drained acidic soils. Full sun will produce better fruit and autumn colours.
Attributes
A great choice for the smaller garden with it's upright habit, however as this is a suckering plant, it could also be planted as a shrub and used for hedges and screening or for banks and slopes. It thrives well along river banks and ponds.
