A delightful winter eating pear that has received an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Flowering Group: 4

Pick: October

Use: Eating

Description
If you're looking for an outstanding winter eating pear, then Josephine de Malines should be at the top of the list. The fruits are small, conical and greenish-yellow with a dark red flush. Moderately juicy, this pear has white flesh that is rich buttery and perfumed. Known for its heavy cropping abilities, these delicious pears will keep well into the New Year. Named after the wife of Major Esperen at Malines, Belgium and raised in 1830, it has been given an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society and for very good reasons, it really is lovely to eat.

Planting Position

Josephine de Malines prefers to be grown against a wall or fence in a warm, sheltered site. It is known to be a weak-growing variety, despite being an excellent cropper, but best grown in rich soils.

Attributes
Not only does this pear have an intense mouth-watering flavour, the tree is hardy and reliable and will survive in most conditions.
