Overview

Malus toringo 'Scarlett' is a small and spreading ornamental crab apple with an arching habit, often planted for its stunning flowers and foliage.

Description
Scarlett makes for a very attractive small garden tree. This deciduous specimen is wide spreading with an arching habit. The leaves emerge with a purple tinge before ripening to a glossy green. In the autumn they turn red and yellow as the seasons progresses. The flowers are small and bright pink. The fruit are purple and are often retained on the tree into winter. It can be expected to reach between 1.5m-2.5m in height, with a Containerential 4m spread, over 10-20 years.

Planting Position
Given the Containerential spread of this tree consideration needs to be given to its establishment location however, it still remains suitable for most gardens. It is tolerant of full sun or partial shade, exposure, and all soil types and pH. It does however, like most trees, prefer moist but well drained soils.

Attributes
A culinary apple with fruit suitable for jellies. The fruits ripen in the autumn although can persist on the tree for several months. Crab apples are self fertile and as such do not require a pollination partner, they do however make an effective pollinator for a wide variety of culinary and dessert apples.
