Overview
The Tulip Tree is an award-winning, large parkland, ornamental tree with showy flowers when mature.
Description
Liriodendron tulipifera is a large, stately, deciduous tree with a pyramidal to broad conical habit. The attractive foliage is bright green and slightly glossy, turning golden yellows and coppery browns. The tulip shaped flowers are produced in June and July on mature trees. Petals are greenish white with an orange sContainer at the base with their edges overlapping giving it the cup shape. Flowers are followed by dry, scaly, oblong, cone-shaped brown fruits, each bearing numerous winged seeds.
Planting Position
Tulip Trees like to grow in a sunny or semi shaded sContainer. They prefer a rich, moist, well drained, neutral to slightly acid soil.
Attributes
A large tree when fully mature this makes an excellent specimen for a large garden or parkland setting. Please note that the flowers generally only appear on mature trees. If you need to shape the plant do so in late winter. This may reduce the number of flowers in the current season so to avoid this you may prune it right after flowering – in mid-summer.
