Overview

'Lane Roberts' is a medium-sized tree known for its marvellous, rich blackish-red autumn colours.

Description
A truly stunning tree, with a broad, pyramidial and open crown. Its leaves are large, star-shaped and similar to that of the Maple, whilst the leaves on the maple are arranged in opposite pairs, those of the Liquidambar appear alternately. The foliage is glossy green in spring and summer, before turning a brilliant blackish crimson hue that is truly stunning for an autumn display. The flowers produced are insignificant and are followed by burr-like fruit clusters. The tree’s bark is smooth and grey and when pierced, the wood exudes a sweet-smelling resin, which is where its common name comes from.

Planting Position
It is recommended that Liquidambar is planted in full sun to achieve the best autumn colour. Plant in neutral to acid soil that is moist but well-drained. These trees will tolerate occassional drought as well as periodic flooding once the trees mature. It is also important to protect young trees from frost.

Attributes
This tree is an outstanding specimen. It is also perfect for the use of shade. We highly recommend planting it where it can be seen in its fully glory during Autumn.
