Overview

A medium sized, evergreen tree with a conical habit bearing variegated spiny leaves and red fruit.

Description
The genus Holly includes evergeen and deciduous trees and shrubs. Most bear spiny leaves and the female specimen displays attractive red fruit in the autumn. This particular variety prodices a medium sized, evergreen tree with a conical habit. The leaves are green with a well defined creamy margin and are spiny. Holly bear male and female flowers on differnt trees. The flowers are small and white. Pollinated flowers give way to bright red berries. The Silver-margined holly can easily achieve a height of 12m, with a 4-8m spread, over 20-50 years however, can easily sustain past this timeframe.

Planting Position
Holly require full sun or partial shade, particularly the variegated varieties, however, can cope with exposed sites of any aspect. They grow well on all soil types and soil pH. Given the ultimate size of this tree it is not deemed suitable for a small garden space however, medium sized gardens can be considered and Holly do respond well to pruning or planting in multiples to create a hedge or screen.

Attributes
Holly are usually planted for their aesthetic value. The variagted leaf of this variety gives it a lighter crown and female specimens appear highly decorative in the autumn if they bear fruit. Holly berries are usually favoured by birds as a food source.
