Description
A brilliant compromise between the unrooted cuttings and bare root plants, these poplar rods are taken from the poplar trees growing in our Nursery in Devon. They are thick strong, straight lengths of poplar which can be easily planted deeply into the ground where they will develop a good root structure in their first year. Following root establishment, they will then start to put on good growth of up to around 2m per year. These long rods are a fantastic alternative to the mature poplar trees giving a good strong start with a more mature plant than some of the smaller cuttings.
Hybrid poplar are low maintenance, fast-growing trees that provide excellent screening, windbreaks, and can also be coppiced for firewood.
Our hybrid poplars have been produced by natural plant breeding techniques. The result has led to the propagation of our own selection of very vigorous clones that will grow approximately two meters per year (6-8 ft) and will continue to grow to produce large handsome trees with a stout trunk. This deciduous tree has large glossy green heart-shaped leaves, turning yellow in Autumn.
Planting Guidance
Suitable for any well drained soil. Any aspect. Sheltered or exposed sites. Sun or part shade. Like willow, the poplar will cope in fairly wet conditions.
The poplar rods can be planted in a similar way to the cuttings - aiming for a good 45-60cm into the ground - and will develop their own roots over the course of the first year. The more length you can get into the ground, the stronger root system will be developed giving the plant a better start.
