Overview

Common Hawthorn or Quickthorn is the most widely used native hedging plant often used for stock-proof hedges. A hardy plant which will grow well in nearly every soil and situation except high altitude and deep shade. It can be trimmed hard and used for laying hedges, but if left to grow will develop into a rounded thorny tree with glossy dark green leaves. Clusters of fragrant white flowers are followed by glossy red fruit.

Description
Hawthorn is a deciduous tree native to the UK and across Europe. Also known as the May Tree (as in the old saying 'Never cast a clout till May is out') due to its flowering period, it is the only British plant named after the month in which it flowers. Mature trees can grow to a height of 15m, but can also be grown as a small tree with a single stem. Hawthorn is also a firm favourite for countryside hedging and often forms the basis for a native hedging mix.

Planting Position
Suitable for most locations and soil types. Best grown in fertile, moist but well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Tolerant of very exposed positions, hawthorn is often seen on windy moorland or costal sites, its form distinctively shaped by the prevailing wind.

Size
Growth Rate: Medium-Slow
Final height: 4-8 m
Final Spread: 4-8 m

Foliage & Flowers
Bark is brown/grey, the twigs are slender and covered with thorns. The leaves are around 6cm long, deep lobed. The flowers are white or occasionally pink with five petals, they are highly scented and grow in flat sprays with red berries in the autumn.

Plant Interest
Hawthorn can provide food for around 300 insects. The berries are rich in antioxidants and provide food for many birds. The dense nature is also very attractive to nesting birds.

Landscape Use
Predominantly used in hedges and wildlife gardens.

Uses
The timber from Hawthorn is very versatile, it is used in wood turning, veneers, cabinets and boat parts. Makes good charcoal and firewood.
